Would an EV fit your routine?

Use this first-pass checklist when deciding whether an EV could suit your daily travel. It combines charging access and driving demands into a planning score; it does not select a vehicle.

Use your own figures or load the worked example below. All calculations stay in this browser.

km / dayInclude the full day's driving, not only a one-way commute.
Choose reliable access only if you can regularly charge where you park.
Count trips that are likely to need charging away from your normal routine.
Choose cold winters if winter driving is a recurring constraint.
Enter your routine to see a fit summary.

The result is a conversation starter. Confirm local charging, vehicle range, and warranty details before buying.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your usual daily distance in kilometres, including the return journey.
  2. Choose the charging access, long-trip frequency and climate that describe your routine.
  3. Calculate the score, then check the suggested constraints against specific vehicles and routes.

Worked example

A commuter with reliable charging

Typical daily driving
35 km / day
Reliable overnight charging
Yes, at home or work
Long trips per month
0–1 trip
Typical climate
Mostly mild

Expected result Strong starting fit · planning score 9

35 km/day earns 2 points, reliable charging 3, infrequent long trips 2 and mild weather 2. The total is 9; this is a screening score, not a probability.

How to read this result

Scores of 7–9 give a strong starting fit; 4–6 suggest a promising fit; lower scores need more checking. Daily distance above 120 km always calls for a route-specific check, regardless of points. A high score cannot confirm affordability or local charger reliability.

How it is calculated

  • Daily distance: up to 60 km earns 2 points, 61–120 km earns 1, and above 120 km earns 0.
  • Charging access: reliable = 3 points, sometimes = 1, none = −2. Long trips: 0–1/month = 2, 2–4 = 1, 5+ = 0. Climate: mild = 2, mixed = 1, cold = 0.
  • Add the points: 7–9 is a strong starting fit, 4–6 is promising, and lower scores need more checking. Daily distance above 120 km overrides the score with a route-specific check.

Assumptions

  • Daily distance is compared with broad planning bands, not a specific vehicle's real-world range.

What this estimate cannot tell you

  • This is a screening aid, not a purchase recommendation. Local infrastructure, routes, and vehicle trim matter.
